Keep reading to discover some great getaways that are close to home and have availability over the long holiday weekend.

Lakeside luxury with The Lodge at St. Edward State Park

Just 25 minutes from Seattle, The Lodge at St. Edward State Park offers an idyllic retreat along the shores of Lake Washington. Surrounded by old-growth forests, visitors here will find plenty of hiking and cycling trails for a weekend of soft adventure, followed by a restful sleep within a stunning boutique hotel.

The Lodge has undergone one of the most significant preservation and restoration efforts of a national landmark, transforming a former seminary originally constructed in 1931. The renovation showcases the site’s historical elegance with the addition of several modern comforts. In all, the property offers 84 guestrooms, a restaurant, a signature cocktail program with a speakeasy, and a luxury spa.

Northwest-inspired restaurant Cedar & Elm is led by James Beard award-winning chef Jason Wilson. The menu is inspired by The Lodge’s on-site garden, sustainable sourcing from area farmers and purveyors, and seafood selections from regional waters.

On-site Vita Nova Spa offers nature-inspired massages, facials and more, and the outdoor spa area invites guests to connect with nature while enjoying the tranquil grounds before or after a treatment.

“This hotel is truly one of a kind,” said Jenne Oxford, general manager of The Lodge at St. Edward. “You drive up through the park and immediately feel a sense of calm wash over you as you’re surrounded by the natural landscape and the grandeur of this historic building and anticipate the experience ahead. We want guests to feel like they are truly escaping from their day-to-day, even if that’s for a few hours for a spa treatment or dinner with friends or family, or for a longer weekend getaway.”

Scenic exploration along the Columbia River Gorge

Spend your weekend focused on hiking, cycling and paddling along Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge. Enjoy a scenic family-friendly hike at Tom McCall Nature Preserve at Rowena, home to an easy 2.2-mile loop along the bluff edge along the Columbia River. Or discover the Hood River Fruit Loop trail, a 35-mile introduction to area farms, fruit stands, wineries, breweries and cideries.

Wine lovers in the area will also want to visit Sunshine Mill Winery and Artisan Plaza, formerly a wheat mill producing everything from biscuits to Cheez-its and now restored as a tasting room. On weekends, Sunshine Mill also transforms into a drive-in movie theater projecting films on the grain silos.

While discovering trails along the Columbia River, save time for exploring area eateries. The Baldwin Saloon is a local favorite restaurant and gathering place in The Dalles serving fried oysters, pan-seared rockfish, bronzed salmon, and scratch-made ice cream perfect for hot summers.

Then for a cozy place to stay with easy access to gorge activities and The Dalles, book a room at Hood River Hotel. This vintage property is on the national register of historic places and offers immediate access to downtown Hood River eateries and beloved beverage hot spots.
